Synchronous and Asynchronous Learning Challenges
When teaching small groups, it is a challenge to have materials ready in-person. Setting up multiple lessons during a pandemic makes it even more challenging! There are letters to get ready for making words, sentence cards for making sentences, reading materials, art supplies, and much more just to have a lesson ready to go. And that’s for your in-person groups. What to do for virtual learning is a different skillset.
Virtual learning requires accessible/scheduable resources kids can use with a lesson synchronously or after the lesson independently. Bagging up supplies for so many lessons can be a nightmare!
Making Virtual Learning Easier
After considering what works for small group instruction in-person, I began to hash out a plan for tools I could use with students virtually. They needed to be useful during instructional time with me, but also be accessible after the lesson for independent practice.
This is what I came up with, and it is working extremely well!
All small group lessons have at least four components:
*Using the Guided Reading Activities Set for making words, making sentences and practicing our names is working well. I prepare the lesson by typing in the day’s words and sentences. These can be saved with lesson name in the google drive.
*For letter practice, I use the Letter Activities sets that feature sound identification and plenty of writing practice. These can be used asynchronously as many times as needed. Students just use the undo button to reset in Google Slides, or the eraser tool in Jamboard. Jamboards are linked on slides for authentic writing, or text boxes are available in slides for typing a word or sentence. These are just a few of the distance learning activities in my TpT store.
