Politics aside, our students need to know about the peaceful transition of P.O.T.U.S. to the next administration. We need to let them know our country is a democracy that uniquely transfers power without military takeovers that endanger it’s citizens. On this point, our forefathers got it right! So it is delightful when a childrens book comes along that takes the focus off of current political winds, and instead brings the focus to what it must be like to live in the White House as a pet.
In her book, “Passing the Bone, America’s Next POTUS”, author Heather Patterson approaches the peaceful transition from one president to another through the eyes of the Pup of the United States! What a great way to teach history to young children. My favorite illustration in the entire book is on the two pages that feature our five current and past presidents. And probably my next favorite thing is how the names of former Pups of the United States names are intertwined throughout the story. The illustrations are beautiful and spot on for the subject matter! Political caricatures are a common sight during the election season. To know more about Jingo De La Rosa, here is his link:
I am especially excited that Heather has included lesson plans on her website to go along with the book. Herself, a teacher, Heather kept in mind the readability and comprehension level of students who will hear or read this book. It is totally appropriate for kids ages 4-8, since four year olds will love getting to know the First Pups, and older readers will find the text just right to enjoy reading on their own.
I am including a Bio of the author, to tell you more about her:
Heather Patterson is a debut children’s author and Kindergarten teacher from Dallas, TX. Passionate about children, education, and politics, she wrote “Passing the Bone: America’s Next POTUS” for young readers to relate to current events. Heather has provided meaningful resources for both educators and students on her website, including lesson plans, vocabulary words, writing activities, and historical facts specific to Passing the Bone.
It is my hope that later this school year, my own class will get to meet the author during a Skype visit! If she is a kindergarten teacher, she must be FUN above all!
Now, here’s the great news!!! Heather is giving a copy of her book to one lucky teacher! All you have to do is enter my Rafflecopter Giveaway, then stay tuned for the winner to be announced.
