I don’t know about you, but I NEEDED this seasonal change! There is something about Fall that really gets my energy flowing, and is an extreme help to my state of mind. I have enjoyed dragging out my decor, cooking comfort foods, and going on drives to look for color. All of this calms the worry of present day happenings.
Guided Reading, Distance Learning, and a Seasonal Approach
By now, most schools have decided whether to have students attend in person, or do some type of hybrid arrangement where some kids are in class, and some stay home, or groups of students are rotated every other day, etc. Whatever the situation, we must teach them to recognize the alphabet and read and write. What is a fun way to engage students during guided reading? Bring the colors of the season to small group instruction!
This past week, I busied myself with developing a guided reading set of templates that I would use during small groups. The set has components of good reading instruction:
- Working with Words–introduce new words, or review learned words
- Sentence Building Activities (cards to rearrange (editable) to make sentences that make sense with fall themes
- Work on Writing–building sentences, then practice writing them
- Thinking about Initial Consonant Sounds through Labeling Activities
Here is the FREE set for Fall! Just click on the link under the video to make a copy. This is part of a bundle that is in development. The next set will be about Christmas, Hanakkuh and Winter. I hope you enjoy Fall!
Speaking of Labeling Activities…
Over the years, I have created several labeling activities as FREE downloads on my blog. You can find them in the following blog posts.
Other Guided Reading Activities for Distance Learning
Because we are in uncharted territory, I have created several distance learning products over the past three months. You can find them here:

This Guided Reading Bundle includes teacher-directed practice during small group time, as well as individual practice activities for after lessons. Using these every day will increase fluency and mastery of the letters and sounds.
I hope you have a safe and happy Fall! Enjoy your FREEBIEs!
