Things are winding down…

Hello everyone! Things are winding down, and it’s that time of year.  We are in the thick of standardized testing, end of year assessments and crunching skills to have our kiddos ready for 1st grade! My students just finished taking the IOWA Test, and I am happy to say they did really well! It has been a great year for growth.

As most agree, kinder kids are not “wired” for taking tests.  They are young, and quite frankly are not developmentally ready.  However, this does not influence those who still require testing at this level.  Since I cannot do much about having to administer standardized tests to my students, I decided I can help them to prepare for the type of questions they will encounter.

Why Practice for a Standardized Test?

As a veteran kindergarten teacher, I have administered many tests.  It has given me insight into what kinder kids need to know:

What should they know before test time?

*How to fill in the circle under or beside their choice.

*They need to understand they can choose only one answer.

*They need to hear the vocabulary often used by the teacher as he/she proctors the test.

All of this gives the child a little insight into what is coming.  It isn’t a full test, but it IS a sample of what they may encounter.  This practice has been invaluable for my students over the years!
