If you are an early childhood teacher, you have no doubt heard of the Mrs. Wishy Washy series of readers by the amazing Joy Cowley. As a kindergarten teacher, I find her engaging character series the perfect choice for accelerating my students’ reading level. This series covers levels 8-16. With more complex sentences, studies in parts of speech, depth of comprehension and challenging vocabulary these books are just what I need, and they’re perfect for your students too!
The Sloppy Tiger set is engaging for young children because they identify with favorite playtime buddy taking on an imaginary life of its own. My students enjoy the stories, the humorous illustrations and the adventures Poppy and Sloppy Tiger go on.
The “Oscar” set is perfect for helping students see how everyone in a family contributes. Oscar gets into all sorts of incriminating situations, but somehow always finds a way to put a positive spin on the end of each story.
One of my most favorite features in all of the character series books is the Text Features section on the inside of the back cover. If I were a beginning teacher, I would be in love with this! Every important feature of the book is laid out in thoughtful sequence, leading the teacher through an entire guided group discussion. This is phenomenal! Here is an example of what is included at the end:
