For four years I have used the clip chart along with Whole Brain Teaching routines and rules practice, and have achieved great results! The picture below highlights our owl-themed clip chart.  Each day students begin on green, Ready to Learn.  As the day progresses students who exhibit behaviors above and beyond expected behaviors will have their clip moved up.  It takes extraordinary work or behavior to clip to the tip top.  Helping a friend or making extra effort to cooperate in class would be an example of above and beyond behavior.  If a student needs to revisit a rule, he/she will have their clip moved down to Think About It.  If a student persists with unwanted behavior, he/she will have to Practice the Rule at recess for a few minutes (I actually have them to tell me which rule they were not following, then we say the rule together a few times–I usually have them to come to the classroom while others continue to recess for “maximum” effect).  If a student has clipped down to Think About It, and I see improvement, their clip goes back to Ready to Learn.  I am having a picnic lunch with my top of the chart kids when our designated celebration time comes.  I try to do something that doesn’t cost a thing, but has the impact of showing appreciation for extra effort students put forth to BE good students! Another thing I do is move the student clip to the rule on our rules poster oval that needs practice.  This happens when a child moves down to Think About It.  The clip goes back to the other chart to Ready to Learn when I see improvement.  To maintain privacy, each student has a numbered clip, so the classroom visitor will not know at a glance who has had a clip moved.  This also helps students to learn numbers (a side benefit).  My favorite part of this system is probably the fact that students can redeem themselves easily, and clip back up to the starting point again.  There are many opinions regarding this system, but mine is positive.  And if you have not tried Whole Brain Teaching in your classroom, you should!!! http://wholebrainteaching.com   Also, you can watch Andrea Schindler’s kindergarten in action using WBT on youtube!
