As many of us struggle to squeeze it all in, I find myself being thankful for the longer school day our district went to this year. We added minutes to our day by beginning the day five minutes earlier, and extending the end of our day by 5-10 minutes. This affords more time for RTI, and makes it possible to have over two hours of small group instruction time! I am now able to see all four of my groups EVERY day! Our total literacy block is at least 3 hours when you account for mini-lessons and writing.
I look forward to January each year, because my students come back to school with a better understanding of phonemic awareness, and understand or soak information up more quickly. Our class is currently working our way through the Common Core Math Standards for Numbers in the Teens. I am so proud of how they have learned to group, identify, and decompose numbers. The sequence in which I teach math this year has changed to include understanding number concepts as our primary “mission”. We will work with Measurement next, which really is an extension of number sense. We will end our year by working with Geometry. Here is a copy of my schedule:
