A few years ago, I discovered jumbo letters, and how they can be used with my work stations. One activity my kids really enjoy is the Jumbo Letter/Sound Match station. In a portable tub station are two complete sets of jumbo magnetic letters (both uppercase and lowercase), and a large laminated alphabet bulletin board set from A-Z and numbers to 0-9. When they were available, I purchased three sets with a black background and colored letters and numbers. They are the most vivid, and seem to be easier to match with letters. The last time I tried to purchase them they were no longer available. I believe they were a Frog Street set. Students were to sequence the letter strips, match the letters to the strips, state the letter name and the sound, then graph how many of each of five random letters on a sheet also kept in the tub. This sheet was hole punched by the student and added to our math binder (math journals). If you have access to a large area of carpet to line up the set on, you can put velcro dots on the back of each to make them stay in place while kids are doing the activities.
